Game-Style Scrimmages

To give players the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned during the week, we host a weekly “stop & go” style scrimmage every Friday evening. These sessions focus on game-like scenarios with real-time coaching & feedback to reinforce individual development within team play.

Scrimmages are tentatively scheduled for Fridays 5:00 PM-6:30 PM & are open to all available participants.

What is a ‘Stop & Go’ Scrimmage?

A stop-and-go scrimmage in soccer is a type of controlled practice game where the coach intentionally pauses (stops) the scrimmage at key moments to give real-time feedback, make corrections, or explain tactical decisions—then resumes (go) play.

Purpose:

  • Teaching: It's often used to break down game situations and teach positioning, decision-making, or strategy.

  • Correction: Coaches can stop play to correct spacing, ball movement, defensive shape, or other concepts.

  • Reinforcement: Helps reinforce key principles while they’re fresh and visible in the moment.

How it Works:

  • Players scrimmage as usual.

  • Coach blows a whistle or calls “freeze” to stop play when a teaching moment arises.

  • Coach briefly explains or corrects the situation (can reposition players, ask questions, etc.).

  • Coach then restarts the game from the same spot or slightly rewinds the play.

This type of scrimmage is especially helpful for younger players or teams learning new tactics. It's less about competitive flow & more about learning in context.
