What is the difference between a good coach & a great coach?
In my lifetime, I’ve played for an extensive amount of soccer coaches, some that were good, a few that were terrible (should not be coaching youth anything), and made me dislike the game for a short period of time, which leads me into talking about the few great coaches I was lucky enough to be associated with throughout my youth-collegiate career. These few individuals had 3 main attributes that made them superior to the rest:
They had a shared passion for the game of soccer. Nothing beats a coach with a winning heart & passion running through his/her veins. Although tough, competitive, & hard on us at times, they embodied a level of compassion towards each player, creating a bond that has yet to be broken to this day. In fact, many of our ideas & skill-development drills come right from my U-18 Club Coach’s playbook.
They knew we were kids, & did not want to destroy the love we developed for the game of soccer. After all, having fun is the #1 rule, & I do not just say that to the little kids for nothing: I MEAN IT. Great coaches not only played at a level far above most, but they find joy in watching others surpass their abilities & are able to foster the development of young athletes.
They are true leaders, & true leaders like me and Coach Jordan focus on the growth of others & by putting others on a pedestal – not themselves – & they share their success by making sure everyone gets the credit they deserve.
